How to Sell Stuff on eBay Tips for Quick, Easy Profits
How to Sell Stuff on eBay Tips for Quick, Easy Profits To celebrate its 20th birthday, eBay is offering big discounts during a â20 Days of Dealsâ event and is hosting a special two-day âsummitâ that starts Thursday at the San Jose Convention Center. The convention is focused on businesses and serious independent sellers who aspire to make good moneyâ"perhaps even a good livingâ"from moving merchandise on eBay. We thought the arrival of eBayâs big anniversary would also be a good time to reflect on the many times when it seemed easy even for novices to cash in by flipping suddenly hot items online for quick profits. Weâre talking about crazes like the one that occurred this past spring, when the release of Lilly Pulitzer designs at Target crashed the retailerâs siteâ"and when anyone who managed to get their hands on the quickly sold-out merchandise could sell it for a handsome premium online. From McDonaldâs Big Mac âsecret sauceâ to a long list of must-have sold-out toys that appear like clockwork, frenzies over suddenly hot goods pop up quite regularly. With each comes the opportunity to make some money by buying low and selling high. After consulting some experts and gathering research, weâve assembled a list of tips to keep in mind if youâre trying to play this game. The strategies arenât limited to eBay, mind you. In most cases, theyâre just as valid if youâre selling on Amazon, Craigslist, or any other outlets. Keep up with the trends. Sometimes a hot, must-have item pops up totally out of the blue. For instance, few people predicted that a robotic hamster (a.k.a. Zhu Zhu Pets) would be the hottest toy of the 2009 holiday season, selling for an enormous premium online to parents desperate to please their kids on Christmas morning. More often, however, someone who is paying attention to pop culture and shopping trends can make an educated guess as to the kinds of items that will be in high demand among rabid fans. Target has a long history of partnering with trendy designers like Missoni and Lilly Pulitzer, and the results have typically been near-instantaneous sellouts followed by higher-priced resales at eBay. Likewise, you didnât need the Force to foresee that, among other Stars Wars merchandise, the remote-controlled BB-8 Droid from the forthcoming âStar Wars: The Force Awakensâ would be an instant hitâ"and will probably be in high demand for months to come. Danna Crawford, a.k.a. the Power Selling Mom, who has been a seller on eBay since 1997 and is attending eBayâs 20th anniversary convention this week, advises would-be sellers to take a close look at Sunday newspaper circulars and advertisements to see what products are being pumped up. âAll the big box companies have done their homework,â she says, and theyâll be promoting the items that are most likely to be popular among shoppers. Plan ahead. Even if you think itâs crazy to wait in line for hours to buy the latest iPhone or retro Air Jordans, the fact that people will endure such situations should be a sign that these items will be hot sellers online. When you have a good idea that a soon-to-be-released product will be in high demand, figure out all the particulars, including when the item will first go on sale online, and/or what stores in your area will have ample supplies. Itâs obviously easier to do your shopping in your pajamas on the couch, but there is a risk of getting shut out: Targetâs website crashed this past spring when the Lilly Pulitzer collaboration was launched. Then again, waiting in line for a store to open is a time suck, and the in-store shopping experience can be frenzied at first. React quickly. Even if you donât know of a hot item in advance, there could still be time to react and profit from a craze. But donât sit on your hands. Hop into action as quickly as you can. If a retailerâs website is sold out, check out the possibilities of a âbuy online, pick up in storeâ option near your location. Shop frequently, because whenever possible stores are replenishing their supplies. Play your cards right and you could profit handsomely. One man reportedly made $6,000 in a couple months after quickly jumping on the Zhu Zhu Pets craze a few years ago. Think: limited supply, limited time. If anyone could buy a $100 unlimited Olive Garden pasta pass anytime they wanted, there would be no reason someone would be willing to pay extra. Same thing goes for the âexclusiveâ $450 Starbucks gift card that went on sale for a brief time a couple years back. But because these and other items are sold in limited supply, for a limited time, people who are left out have a tendency to, well, feel left outâ"and are often willing to pay well above the retail price in order to play along and get bragging rights. Strike while the iron is hot. âThe biggest lesson Iâve learned about selling on eBay is to sell, sell, sell when the market is hot hot hot,â says Crawford. âDo not sit on items too long, thinking more money can be made later because when the market peaks, it will soon wind down.â Be smart about listings, prices, and service. Among the most common eBay selling mistakes are typos or vague descriptions in listings, poor (or no) photographs, the failure to answer questions, and charging too much for shipping. Get the basics right or youâll be shooting yourself in the foot in terms of closing sales. Also, curiously, research has shown that sellers who use quirky, âpreciseâ âBuy It Nowâ prices like $137 or $84 tend to yield higher sales prices than those who use big round numbers in increments of $50 or $100. Donât get greedy. âIâve seen it over and over again with eBay sellers making this huge mistake,â Crawford says of eBay sellers trying to wait for already high prices of Tickle Me Elmos, Beanie Babies or whatever the hot item of the moment, to go even higher. But this is an extremely risky game to play. âI feel, take the money and run because when greed sets in, empty Paypal accounts are not far behind.â Note return policies. Before maxing out your credit card and filling your garage with Star Wars merchandise, Nike Air Max LeBron sneakers, or some fancy new gadget you are convinced will be in extremely high demand, take a close look at the return policy where youâre making the purchase. If the craze you foresee doesnât crystallize to the extent you were hoping, you could be literally stuck holding the bagâ"lots of bags, in fact. On the other hand, if sales turn out to be a dud and the storeâs return policy allows you to bring the unsold items back, thereâs no harm done.

The Attitude of Success Its All in Your Head - Work It Daily
The Attitude of Success Itâs All in Your Head - Work It Daily Projecting an attitude of success can start with simply working on your body language. With a strong posture and a solid handshake you are well on your way to exuding confidence. But to complete the picture, to truly project an attitude of success, the real work may need to be done in your head. Some say simply believing you are successful will make you successful. Sounds crazy, right? But thatâs the premise of the law of attraction. Same with the recent phenomena, The Secret. For the more scientific minded, we can reference the placebo affect. Patients told they are being given a curing medicine actually get better despite the fact what they are given is only a sugar pill. Bottom line, the brain is the most powerful organ in the body. And how we harness that power has a bearing on the image we project, and ultimately on our success. Skip the Yips Ralph Waldo Emerson said, âA man becomes what he thinks about.â To project success you need to first quiet the negative voice inside your own head. These self-limiting beliefs can be our biggest enemy when it comes to being successful. Former professional golfer Tommy Armour coined the term âyipsâ to describe when athletes are so caught up in their own heads they, inexplicably, can no longer perform routine parts of their game. A relatively simple putt, for instance, or an All-Star pitcher who suddenly cannot get the ball over home plate. Although science is still studying possible neurological causes for to the âyips,â it is widely believed the main cause is psychological. To project an attitude of success, stay clear of the negative and focus on the positive. Be Half Full Studies have shown a casual link between optimistic attitudes and good health. Being optimistic can do more than extend our lives however; it can also improve our success rate in business. Sales guru Zig Ziglar says attitude is a defining factor in a personâs ability to succeed. He quotes a Harvard University study found when it comes to job offers and promotions, decisions are based only 15 percent on the candidates actual technical knowledge or skill. Eighty-five percent of the decision to hire or promote an employee is based on the individualâs attitude. View your glass as half full and youâve won more than half the battle. Be a Copycat Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Decide what success looks like to you, and learn to imitate it. Everyoneâs version will be different. If, to you, success means moving up the corporate ladder, then know what it looks like on the top rung. If success means simply getting through each crazy day in an organized and stress-free fashion, then envision that day. Keep the image of success in your head and do everything possible to look like it, behave like it, and most importantly believe that you can accomplish it. When it comes to projecting an attitude for success, childrenâs character Bob the Builder may be the best role model. âCan we do it?â he asks his audience each day. Without questioning the details, doubting their abilities or hesitating for one moment, his audienceâs answer is always the same. âYes we can!â You go, Bob. Understanding Your Perception At Work And Four Tips For Better Visibil
Understanding Your Perception At Work And Four Tips For Better Visibil This article was originally published on Sharpheels.Weve all seen it before two people of the saatkorn skill set and experience and performance level start out as peers at work, but over the years, one seems to move up further and faster than the other. What makes up the difference? How does one managed to advance over another? Especially in this climate of meritocracy work cultures. The key, according to dream job coach Joel Garfinkle, has to do with something he calls the PVI model Perception, Visibility and Influence. So its helpful to consider unterstellung terms (I will be focusing on Perception and Visibility, as they are the pillars that support Influence) and they are generally the ones that we have trouble with the most, especially early in our careersPerceptionFeedback is a standard part of our work experience, whether it be via an annual review or a more frequent occurrence. But usually this feedback is focused on work performance. Performance generally isnt the deciding factor between the employee who gets promoted and the employee that doesnt. The difference is perception. According to Garfinkle, Perception matters because only those who are seen in a favorable light by their bosses, peers, and subordinates will continue to move ahead in their careers. So how do you improve your perception? The first step is knowing how youre perceived by bosses, peers, subordinates, customers, etc. While this is a simple concept, it doesnt mean its easy. It requires committing yourself to asking people feedback but for once, thats not about your performance, but about how people see you.Asking for this feedback can be hard or uncomfortable. It requires vulnerability. But its a commitment in your future and your advancement. Garfinkle has several strategies to help such as picking three people to whom you will reach out to by the end of the week to ask for feedback. Or try a more informal appr oach, such as asking someone after a presentation Hey, how did you think that went? in order to make any needed changes to your perception you first have to be aware.VisibilityYou cant move up at work, or be thought of for those next big opportunities, without being seen. Self-promotion can be seen as an unflattering term, so I prefer to frame it as self-advocating. Be confident in the value that you bring in your role where you are right now, and communicate it to those around you. At the same time, when you see others doing valuable work that deserves some attention, be the first to recognize it and call it out. In doing so you create a positive impression with that co-worker, as well as being a trusted advocate and they will likely want to return the favor.Garfinkle also recommends four other ways to gain visibility1. Get Assigned to Important Projects This is another simple, but not necessarily easy, task. What qualifies as an important project will vary from company to company and role to role. Think about what helps your manager accomplish his or her goals, or solve a major pain point for your team. Always ask, what will improve your key metrics or affect the bottom line? Some projects can be self-identified, which also shows you can take initiative. In addition, its important to let your manager know that you want to be considered for the next big project team. Or if there is a key project or issue about which you are passionate, ask your manager and the team lead if you can help out.2. Gain Face Time with Top Executives Depending on the size of your company, this can be difficult. But there are usually formal and informal ways to get to know key leaders. (At my office, for instance, there are employee affinity groups, such as Women in Tech, or Early in Career, that all have executive sponsors.)Volunteering with unterstellung groups, or to lead an event, helps you to gain visibility with the executive sponsors for those groups. The point is to think abo ut with whom you want to connect and get to know more, and the best opportunity to do that. It could be something as simple as over coffee in the break room.3. Share your IdeasSpeak up This took me a few years (in fact, into my twenties) for me to find a comfortable task. Starting at a new company or in a new role, I always had questions or even ideas to be shared but I rarely spoke up in meetings because I was concerned I didnt understand the full context of the company, the team, etc. (My tendency is to observe first, until I know the players and the rules of the team.) But once I realized that this company hired me to have ideas, and to even have a fresh, outside perspective, then I got more comfortable. 4. Become Known and RecognizedThink about what your brand is at work. Lead with your strengths. For instance, some recent feedback from my manager is that I know how to up-level content and present well for an executive audience. Knowing this is a strength (and also a perception ), I can develop myself into being the go-to person for presentations and refining content. If your strength is managing data and doing analysis, then become known as the go-to person for that. A peer on a previous team had branded herself as the skeptic (in a good way), and was always known for asking the tough questions. In doing so, she helped to elevate any idea or project by pointing out flaws. People appreciated this role she filled, and she became valued throughout our whole department.Remember, as you are gaining visibility, stay aware of your perception. Its not a static opinion, so keep the feedback loop going. The more you practice these activities, the more comfortable and confident you will feel. By taking real steps in these areas, soon you will be getting the opportunities and career growth that you deserveDo you have tips about how to become more visible and improve others perceptions of you at work?Join the conversation in our community and share what you know with o ther women in the workplaceFairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.

Meet Lucy. She wants a promotion.
Meet Lucy. She wants a promotion. Meet Lucy. She wants a promotion.Posted November 14, 2013, by Andrea Riddell A friend, lets call zu sich Lucy, recently came to me with a conundrum. She had wanted to apply for a new role at her current workplace and had discussed her suitability with her manager, as the role would essentially be a promotion. She welches ready for some different challenges but notlage sure if she would qualify for a full-blown step up the ladder. Her boss had concluded that she was not, in fact, ready, but was definitely on the way. Lucy then asked for some projects and tasks that she could work on in order to prepare herself for a similar role in the near future. Lucy asked her manager for a promotion Put yourself out there This is key, people Firstly, dont be afraid to ask for a promotion. Putting yourself on the line and essentially talking up your performance can instil the fear of god into some people, particularly women. Youre essentially putting a magnifying g lass on your skills and potential and asking someone to analyse your suitability. The problem is, employees tend to see the promotion/pay rise question as something that constitutes a yes or no answer, when in reality its an open and ongoing discussion. Make sure youre ready A pay rise would be nice, but are you ready for the extra responsibilities and workload that comes with it? If youre not excelling at the work youre already doing then it might be hard to convince your manager that youre ready for more. People progression at different rates. Levels of ambition also differ. Dont feel like you need to take on more if you actually dont want to. You need to prepare yourself for the discussion with your manager. Put together a record of your performance, including how youve managed to meet your KPIs and all your other achievements. That way youll have solid evidence to show that youre ready. Lucy wasnt sure if she wanted the extra responsibility And what if youre not ready? After ask ing for a promotion and being albeit kindly rejected, Lucy then asked her boss how she could work her way up to that position and together they highlighted some projects that she could take on to facilitate this. The conversation doesnt finish when your boss declines your request for a promotion. Just because you dont happen to be ready right now does not mean that you wont get there in the future. Ask for some mentoring on how you can progress and gain more experience. This will not only make sure youre on an upward trajectory, but it will also show your boss that youre serious about your career and your future at your workplace. Now back to Lucy A couple of weeks later, I checked in with Lucy. Over some Peking duck she told me how her boss had perhaps absent-mindedly, who knows removed Lucy from some of the projects that were meant to prepare her for a higher position. She was confused that her boss would help her devise a progression plan, only to act as a blockade. I encoura ged Lucy to schedule another chat with her manager to find out what her intentions were. Perhaps she had changed her mind and didnt believe Lucy was ready for those projects. Or perhaps, with limited time and resources, she was re-delegating to the people she felt were more suited. Lucy and her manager devise a plan How to stop this happening to you Managers can be busy, and its hard to remember everything when youre busy. Perhaps Lucys manager had just forgotten. Or, even worse, perhaps Lucys manager was passively (and somewhat aggressively) showing Lucy she didnt have confidence in her abilities. Sometimes discussing a plan to take on more work is not as effective as actually putting together a plan to take on more work. Lucy and her manager need to put together a timeframe for Operation Promotion with several progression checkpoints along the way. This would help keep Lucy on track to career ascendancy. If youre in the saatkorn predicament as Lucy, heres what you need to remember Start the discussion before your performance review. You dont have to wait for the annual performance review to ask for a promotion. Approach your boss when youre ready. Your career progression is an ongoing thing. Its not just one conversation. And its not about one single promotion. Its about growing and refining your abilities and skillset. Not many people are happy to rest on their laurels and reach a plateau in their career. If youre looking to keep interested and challenged youll need to view this as an ongoing process. The ball is in your court. Dont rely on your manager to remember that youre trying to groom yourself for a promotion. Keep tabs on your performance and ask for feedback. Youre in charge of your career. Devise a plan. Great. You want a promotion. But how are you going to get one? Make sure you and your manager are clear on how youll be achieving your potential. This way, you will both know when you are finally ready. Payroll Certifications Can Help Your Team
Payroll Certifications Can Help Your TeamPayroll Certifications Can Help Your TeamModern payroll is complicated. From cloud-based systems to tax and regulatory issues, theres a lot that a payroll coordinator or specialist needs to know. To make sure your workers have the proficiency necessary to process payroll efficiently and accurately, there is something company leaders like you can do You can help them attain their payroll certifications. Supporting your payroll staff is a smart move for your organization. Here are four ways payroll certifications can lead to a return on your investment1. Improved work qualityPayroll is a fast-paced, challenging environment with an extremely low tolerance for error. Even a minor misunderstanding of procedures can have enormous repercussions. Workers who have undergone certification training have a demonstrated level of knowledge pertaining to payroll processes, which leads to fewer errors and a boost in productivity. Whats more, staff members pre paring for the exam are actively working to better understand the intricacies of the field. That kind of focus raises performance across the entire kollektiv.2. A standardized approachYour payroll gruppe includes people from diverse backgrounds. They may range from junior clerks to senior administrators, including those whove worked in other industries, larger or smaller companies, and multiple states. All of them have their own set of knowledge and best practices - some of which may be outdated or just plain wrong. After everyone goes through the saatkorn payroll certification program, they should all be on the same page about how the department works.Looking for professionals who have their payroll certifications? Work with a specialized staffing agency to access temporary payroll specialists. WORK WITH US3. Loyalty and staff retentionTop performers want employers to invest in their professional development. Industry qualifications are major milestones in that development, provid ing a tangible reward after a long period of hard work. When you support employees during the certification process, allowing them to study on company time and paying for coursework and exam fees, they will feel that you value their contributions and professionalism. The results? Loyal, highly trained staff members and employee retention.4. Greater commitment to payrollWith their attention to detail and compliance knowledge, good payroll professionals are frequently poached by other finance teams within the organization. But if your team members work toward and attain their certifications, they are, in essence, declaring their intention to make payroll a lifelong career.Helping your team get certifiedIts certainly possible for payroll workers to attain certifications on their own time and dime. But seeing all the benefits of this credential, its a smart move for employers to support their efforts. You can do this byEncouraging entry-level payroll associates to earn the Fundamental P ayroll Certification (FPC), and experienced payroll professionals to work toward their Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) - more on those below.Reimbursing them for the cost of study materials.Allowing them to study and take the exam on during work hours, cultivating your company culture.Sending them to American Payroll Association (APA) seminars and classes so they can accrue enough recertification credit hours (RCHs) to keep their payroll certifications up to date.In the United States, the gold standards are the two issued by the APA. Some Canadian companies, especially those that also do business in the U.S., also value these credentials.Fundamental Payroll CertificationThe FPC is aimed at entry-level payroll workers with little or no experience in the field. The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, and test takers must answer 80 percent of them correctly to receive this certification. FPC candidates normally study for six to 12 weeks before taking the exam, which i s offered every quarter. The exam covers a broad range of key topics, including core payroll concepts, compliance, calculating paychecks, payroll processes, payroll systems, payroll management, auditing and accounting. After attaining the FPC, employees should have a solid grasp of all the main concepts of the field. The FPC exam fee is $320 for APA members and $395 for non-members.Certified Payroll ProfessionalThe CPP is aimed at more experienced payroll workers. Candidates for this payroll certification are required to meet one of three criteria before sitting for the examCriteria 1 - Must have practiced payroll for at least three of the past five years before the exam date.Criteria 2 - Must have been employed as a payroll worker for at least two full years before the exam date, as well as having completed specific APA coursework within the same time period.Criteria 3 - Must have been employed as a payroll worker for at least 18 months before the exam date, have previously obtain ed their FPC, and have completed specific APA coursework within the same time period. The CPP exam consists of 190 multiple-choice questions. The topic list is the same as for the FPC, but the subjects are covered in much more depth than the fundamental certification. There is the addition of a section on leadership and management. CPP holders are experts in their field and are ready for senior roles within a payroll team. The CPP exam fee is $380 for APA members and $550 for non-members.Professionals have long understood the value of payroll certifications greater job satisfaction, more opportunities and a higher salary.
